A Mindful Parenting Book Giveaway!

This lovely new book, Brave Parenting: A Buddhist-Inspired Guide to Raising Emotionally Resilient Children by Krissy Pozatek, will be available in March of 2014, and Wisdom Publications is giving away 5 free copies to recipients of the Mindful Families Newsletter.

I intend to write my March blog about 'Brave Parenting" and what it means to me... but I would also love to hear from you!

The first 5 people to send in a brief story about one of their 'brave parenting' moments will receive a free advance copy of the book. Please include whether or not I can share your brave moment on my blog, and if so, how you would like to be credited - i.e. anonymous, first name, full name, a fun name you have always wanted to give yourself... you get the idea. If you don't want to share it on the blog, no worries - you will still get a copy of the book if you are one of the first 5. Once I have received all 5 winners, I will post a notice on the "News" section on my website.
Happy reflecting.

Practice Idea for February

I chuckle as I reflect on what I teach other children & families in my mindfulness programs and realize I could be drawing on these same practices at home!

So, as another icy-cold, stay-indoors week was drawing to a close, where my son had such a hard time falling asleep, I remembered a practice we share each week in my program - a classic kids practice - 'breathing our stuffies to sleep - or in my sons case, cars.

For this practice, we invite children to choose a favourite stuffed animal to place on their bellies (for older children a stone may be preferable). We then invite them to follow their inbreath and their outbreath, over and over, as the motions of their bellies 'rocks' their stuffie to sleep.

For my son, last week it was his favourite car. This week, it was his favourite marine life toys. Whatever works!

No feeling is final. Everything passes.” -Rilke

Does that apply to croup-like cough and strep-ish throat? It certainly applies to the frustration, worry and impatience that can accompany them.

My son has been sick all week. Then it was my turn, three days and counting. And so came the struggle… My partner has sick time, so he is able to stay home and care for our son. I do not, so the question arose, ‘Do I stay home and take care of myself?’

A Parenting Trend with an Anti-guilt Clause
by Tralee Pearce

I had the wonderful experience of speaking with Globe reporter Tralee Pearce about sharing mindfulness with children. She sent a photographer, Fred, over to our house to photograph my son and I meditating. Ha! I made no promises. My son said, while Fred was taking out picture, "It's weird to have someone take our picture when we ring the bell and breathe." Yep, I agree.

Nonetheless, it was fun and a fabulous article - a great advocate for mindfulness.
Thanks Tralee!

Building Teen Resilience and Reducing Risk: One Breath at a Time

Being a teenager is an exciting period of growth but it can feel like we’re living in a pressure cooker. It is a time when we are vulnerable to difficult thoughts and feelings that can seem impossible to deal with–and it may seem like no one understands. Adolescence is also a phase of life in which we are at higher risk for emotional and mental health problems.

Join us for a new way to work with an age-old challenge: life as a teenager. In this workshop you will learn how mindfulness can help you to manage the challenging times, so you can get back to enjoying your life.

Parents will have the opportunity to learn ways to be more present, less reactive and more compassionate as they support their teen(s) navigate the ups & downs of adolescence.

Parents & teens will participate both together and separately throughout each session.

In this workshop, parents and teens will learn:
* Strategies and practices for working with difficult thoughts and feelings.
* Simple exercises that can be used during challenging moments.
* Small practices you can do at home, to help bring a sense of calm and stability to day to day life.

Dates: Wednesday evenings: April 30 – May 21, 2014 6:30 pm – 8 pm

Facilitators: Sara Marlowe MSW RSW and Elaine Smookler B. Mus.

Registration
This workshop is suitable for teens 13-17 years old and their parents. Please register at least one week in advance of the workshop date you wish to attend.

Looking Ahead

Interpersonal Neurobiology

with Innovative Therapeutic Practices

Registration.
This breakthrough conference offers a full day with Dan Siegel as well as two days with prominent academics, practitioners, theoreticians, researchers and students in the field of mental health who are working at the intersection of neurobiology, mindfulness and innovative therapeutic practices.

This is an exciting period of transition as the field of mental health reconsiders and re-conceptualizes ideas about mental well-being and what constitutes identity. The field of Interpersonal Neurobiology enables us to understand that the function and structure of the mind and brain are shaped by both individual and social experiences. Faculty will provide cutting edge multidisciplinary views that further our understanding of the complex neurobiology of the human mind. They will offer a variety of clinical approaches and scientific viewpoints that are often inaccessible to clinicians. This conference will integrate the best of modern science with the healing art of innovative therapeutic practices.

Sara will be offering a workshop at the conference. "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Mind. Which Part will we Help you Shine? Mindfulness in Therapy with Children."
