Practice Tip for August

Book Pick of the Month

Do you have a story or comment you could share about reading No Ordinary Apple to the wee ones (or grown-ups) in your life?

I would love to hear how people are responding to the book! If you have a story you could share, please send it to me to post on my website (anonymously). And if you have the time to help spread the word, you good even add it on Goodreads. If you purchased the book through an online store, I would be most grateful if you would consider sharing it as a customer review and help spread the joy of mindfulness and mindful eating to youngsters and their families. Here is one story that a reader sent me - she then put it up on Amazon.ca.

How yummy!

I asked my 3 1/2 year old granddaughter and her 4 year old friend if they would like me to read them a new story, No ordinary apple. They were enthusiastic so we settled on the couch, one on each side of me, to read the book. We talked about Elliot's discoveries. Then I said to them would they each like to have an apple and do what Elliot did in the book. Again, I had a very enthusiastic response. So we went through the book again this time doing all the things that Carmen had told Elliot to do. The girls were totally engaged. Then they asked me to read the book to them again.

Then they asked if we had other foods that we could do this with. I found some seaweed, thin rectangular sheets. So we went outside and sat on the back deck and studied the seaweed: the shape, texture, colour, feel, smell. Then we tried slowly eating it. Again, they were totally engaged. We ate the whole little package of seaweed. When we later went to the park and they had a snack of cheese and crackers, they were telling me all the things they noticed about the cheese.

I was absolutely thrilled with the response the book had received and I was delighted with the fun we had had exploring both the apple, the seaweed and then the cheese.

Upcoming Events

Learn how mindfulness can help us remain connected with our children & with ourselves.

Parents can learn to be fully present with their children – in both shared moments of joy as well as when their buttons have been pushed to the limit. Mindfulness meditation teaches people how to develop a non-reactive, non-judgmental stance and to approach themselves and others with compassion. It can help parents facing common challenges such as comforting a colicky baby, responding to temper tantrums, helping children cope with school or communicating with teenagers. Mindfulness can also remind parents to savour the richness of parenting through slowing down and sharing in their children’s day-to-day experiences.

In this 6-week group, participants will:

Learn a variety of mindfulness practices and apply them to everyday parenting in between weekly sessions.
Cultivate and practice present-moment awareness in parenting to remain connected with their children and with themselves.
Develop a community of sharing and support with other parents experiencing similar struggles and triumphs.

Who should attend:
This program is suitable for parents with children of any age. People new to mindfulness are most welcome.

Dates
Monday evenings: Oct. 21 – Nov. 25, 2013 | 6:15 pm – 7:45 pm The Centre for Mindfulness Studies

A 'Mindfulness And Yoga Therapy Group For Emotional Well-Being' offered by my friend and colleague:

Mindfulness therapies offer us a means to manage our emotional health and live in greater balance. Restorative yoga is a form of mindfulness practice that enables us to be more connected with our bodies by learning to rest in stillness and slow down our nervous system.

Join Rachael Frankford, MSW, RSW, this fall for an 8 week program in which you will learn about how we get caught in the cycle of anxiety and depression through our automatic responses to stress and how restorative yoga can help us manage stress by accessing deeper states of relaxation. See flyer for details.
